The Golden State Warriors reportedly waived Chris Paul on Sunday. Shortly after, Paul found a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report shared that Paul was particularly drawn to the Spurs’ culture and the opportunity to help develop Victor Wembanyama’s game.
These factors made the 12-time All-Star prioritize a contract with the Spurs despite interest from the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Chris Paul had a great talk with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and was sold on the culture and opportunity to help elevate the game of Victor Wembanyama. CP is eager and motivated to showcase he’s still an elite guard in this league,” Haynes reported.
Reportedly, Paul’s new deal with the Spurs is worth $11 million for one year. Meanwhile, the Warriors will still be responsible for paying Paul $30 million for the 2024–25 season.
With the addition of Paul, the Spurs roster receives a significant boost for the upcoming season. Before acquiring Paul, the Spurs strengthened their backcourt by selecting shooting guard Stephon Castle with the fourth pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Chris Paul’s Warriors Career in a Nutshell
The Golden State Warriors acquired Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards in July 2023. The headline-breaking deal sent Jordan Poole to the Eastern Conference.
Nevertheless, Paul’s scoring prowess has notably declined from his peak All-Star days. He has played in fewer than 60 games in back-to-back seasons, which also continued with the Spurs.
Last season, Paul made 58 appearances for the Warriors, starting in 18 of those games. He averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. Despite the decline in his scoring, the 39-year-old star maintained a shooting percentage of 44.1% from the floor and 37.1% from three-point range.
