The Atlanta Hawks have secured the first overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft. However, according to The Stein Line, there are rumors that the San Antonio Spurs are considering a trade to move up to the No. 1 spot in exchange for their two first-round picks.
Such a move could allow the Spurs to pair their rising star, Victor Wembanyama, with former Perth Wildcats player Alex Sarr. Sarr is widely expected to go No. 2 overall to the Washington Wizards, as he has yet to participate in a workout with the Hawks.
“Sarr is widely projected to go No. 2 overall to Washington, as we covered here Wednesday. But rumbles about San Antonio interest in jumping up from No. 4 to No. 1 by constructing a trade with the Hawks haven’t gone away,” The Stein Line reported.
How would pairing Victor Wembanyama with Alex Sarr impact the Spurs’ lineup?
The potential trade to move up to the No. 1 spot in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft would be a strategic move for the San Antonio Spurs, especially given their struggles last season. Despite Victor Wembanyama earning the 2023–24 Rookie of the Year award, the team finished with a disappointing 22–60 record. This shows that while Wembanyama’s individual talent is undeniable, the Spurs need to build a stronger supporting cast around him.
The Spurs cannot afford to waste time surrounding Wembanyama with a team that complements his talents. If they have the opportunity to add Alex Sarr, they should seize it.
The former projected No.1 overall pick has already demonstrated his abilities with the Perth Wildcats. With the Wildcats, he averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks over 27 games, playing just 17 minutes per game. His performance indicates that he could be a valuable asset to the Spurs.

Adding Sarr to the lineup would provide Victor Wembanyama with much-needed support. Both players being big men from France, Sarr could help share the workload.
Given their recent struggles, a bold move like this could be exactly what the Spurs need to turn their fortunes around.
