The Lakers’ hunt for a new head coach is one of the summer tales that fans and the media keep a close eye on. However, several qualified applicants are racing for the open position. NBA Insider Shams Charania claims that LA’s front staff will likely hire JJ Redick.
Redick’s expertise in basketball, which he has demonstrated in his role as an analyst and on his podcast, has pleased many, but he is not without his detractors. Former Boston Celtics champion Paul Pierce is one of those who has his doubts.
Pierce doesn’t question Redick’s capacity to succeed but rather the Lakers’ decision to choose him as their next head coach.
Pierce said on ‘The Truth Lounge’ (29:30): “I gotta be honest with you. I really don’t think this is really about a championship no more. This is about putting on a good show. This sounds like a script to me, This really sounds like a script to me. Think about this, they hire JJ Redick, draft Bronny [James] or sign Bronny. Does this sound like something that’s like ‘we’re trying to move in a direction to win a championship?’ Or does it sound like ‘we’re trying to put on a show?’”
Before the Lakers’ former coach was formally fired, Redick’s name had been mentioned as a possible successor to Darvin Ham. A few fans questioned whether this was all a ploy to retain LeBron James on the team, given that he and Redick had just collaborated on a podcast. Others, however, believe that he should be given a shot because of his high IQ and background as a former athlete.
Lakers Are Also Eyeing Candidates Other Than JJ Redick
Rumors suggest that JJ Redick may become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he is not the only applicant mentioned after Darvin Ham’s dismissal.

At first, Tyronn Lue, Mike Budenholzer, and Kenny Atkinson were involved. Tyronn Lue chose to extend his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, while Budenholzer ultimately signed with the Phoenix Suns. Atkinson has emerged as the front-runner for more head coaching openings.
According to a tweet from Shams Charania on May 14, Former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego and veteran NBA assistant coach Sam Cassell were first considered. JJ Redick’s name was added, as were Borrego and Cassell’s.
Whoever they get will have an arduous task ahead of him. When head coaches don’t meet expectations, LA’s front management hasn’t hesitated to fire them. Frank Vogel and Ham are just two recent instances.
