The Dallas Mavericks, last season’s NBA finalists, began the 2024-25 regular season with an 11-point victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks defeated the Spurs 120-109 as Luka Doncic and new-signing Klay Thompson combined for 50 points. Ahead of the game, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich revealed his first reaction to Klay’s trade to the Mavs.
The Dallas Mavericks star duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving powered the team to their first NBA Finals appearance since their championship-winning season in 2010-11. However, the team faced a 4-1 loss to the Boston Celtics in the Finals and failed to win the chip. In the summer, the Mavs boosted their championship-winning chances with the signing of four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors.
The blockbuster trade deal grabbed a lot of attention from the NBA community. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich recently revealed his immediate reaction to the trade deal. “Oh my God, how the h**l did they do that?’ That’s the honest truth. I was probably having a glass of wine somewhere, and it wrecked my whole night,” Popovich said.
“Mavs Blue Looks Good On Me”: Klay Thompson Reacts To His Dallas Debut
On his Dallas Mavericks debut, Klay Thompson recorded the most three-pointers made in a debut game in franchise history. The former Warriors guard led the Mavs in perimeter shooting with 6 three-point shots. Thompson registered 22 points, 7 rebounds, and three steals while shooting 53.8% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc.
In a post-game interview, Klay gave his immediate reaction to his debut with the Mavs. “Couldn’t ask for a better start. Sharing the floor with Kyrie [Irving], Luka [Doncic], and the rest of the guys… I feel great. Blue is my favorite color, and Mavs blue looks good on me,” said Klay.
