In his illustrious NBA career, Shaquille O’Neal spent four seasons with the Miami Heat. During his time with the team, he achieved one of the league’s ultimate goals by winning an NBA championship, guided by the legendary coach, Pat Riley.
Shaq recently shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from his time with the Miami Heat during an interview on The OGs podcast with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller. He opened up about how he managed to convince Riley to allow the team some freedom to party while still performing at a high level.
“My favorite part about UD is, let’s just say we go to New York, because you know they talk about LeBron and them, the Heatles. We were the original Heatels.’ So let’s just say I go to New York and party a little too much. UD can tell in the first three minutes if I’m ready or not. I was the first guy to convince Pat to change his ways,” Shaq said.
Shaq described how he and his teammates enjoyed the nightlife. But at a certain point, the partying started to affect the team’s performance, and Riley tried to impose stricter rules. He then convinced Riley that the team could still perform well with some flexibility. The compromise led to a memorable winning streak.
“I told him, ‘Look, if we go out until 3:00 and get to bed at 4:00, we’ll still be fine.’ Our practices were messed up. So I said, ‘Pat, move practice back to 12:00.’ He said, ‘If you do that, you better show me something.’ That’s when we went on that legendary streak,” Shaq added.

“Shaq was doing a lot of parties back then. We would have parties on the road and kick it. I mean, it was just a fun season, man. We had a lot of fun, we probably could have won 60 games if we didn’t get off to such a bad start,” Walker said.
“We still won 52 games, but we always knew that it was going to be hard for anybody to beat us in a seven-game series. Once we gelled and got ourselves together, we knew that,” he added.
Both Shaq’s own reflections and Antoine Walker’s stories reveal that, along with his dominant play on the court, the analyst of ‘Inside The NBA’ also took his partying seriously. His off-court lifestyle didn’t hinder his performance, and despite the fun, O’Neal’s commitment to winning remained strong.
