Luka Doncic is widely known for his passion for soccer. Still, unknowingly he became the center of attraction among soccer fans before the match between Slovenia and Serbia in the 2024 Euro Cup.
The Mavericks guard himself is a Slovenian and so are his parents but his father’s lineage roots back to Serbian descent led the fans to call him their own. In a video, the die-hard Serbian fans were spotted on the streets singing “Luka Dončić is one of us” in their language.
This move was made on Thursday to rile up the Slovenian fans. However, the strict security kept the situation under control. Luckily the match ended in a 1-1 draw for the teams.
Before the clash, Doncic was asked during the 2024 NBA Finals about whom he would extend his support. Without a second thought, the 5-time All-star named his home country rather than selecting his close friend Nikola Jokic’s country.
Doncic has an opportunity to represent his country in the Paris Olympic Qualifiers but he hasn’t opened up about his decision yet. The reason behind his noncommitment is the numerous injuries he has sustained throughout the playoffs.
Vlatko Cancar Has Candid Message for Luka Doncic
Despite his injuries, Luka Doncic didn’t hold back and kept playing through the post-season tournament. While there could be fingers raised at him if he decides to not turn up for his national team, one of his fellow countrymen said he would respect the guard’s decision.

Denver Nuggets forward Vlatko Cancar stood tall beside Doncic saying that he could not be blamed as he had a rough schedule appearing in 92 games for the Mavs in the entire season. “I mean, I didn’t play at all and I came in and got injured. You never know what can happen. If he needs a rest, he should take it,” said the 27-year-old.
Cancar added, “We don’t know his medical condition. He never said that he won’t play for the national team. But it depends on what his medical record is.”
The team will certainly be boosted if exceptional offensive talent like Doncic decides to join them. However, it won’t be easy to face Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Greece and Croatia in the qualifiers, especially in Doncic’s condition.
