Los Angeles Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss recently shared insights on NBA DNA with host Hannah Storm from ESPN. Specifically, she talked about former coach Phil Jackson’s unique methods for building championship teams.
Phil Jackson, who won 11 titles with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls combined, is widely considered one of the best coaches in the history of the NBA. Lakers’ governor revealed the secrets behind Jackson’s two decades of dominance, offering a glimpse into his winning formula.
Since Jackson and Buss were romantically involved for a long time, Buss had an excellent understanding of how Jackson assembled the five titles that the Los Angeles Lakers won. The interviewer wanted Buss’s thoughts on Jackson’s approach to building a championship squad.
She went on to say that his strategy centered on his desire to foster a family-like atmosphere among the players and inspire them to perform for one another. She said, “I dated Phil for 15 years, so when I was his significant other, I learned how to look at the team through the lens of a coach. I remember getting in a fight with him because he was bringing the team in on Thanksgiving to practice.”
When Phil Jackson took over the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and continued to coach them until 2002, they won three straight NBA titles. Under his guidance, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant won championships despite their strained relationship. It remains to be seen if future Lakers coaches will adopt similar strategies.
