The NBA is going through a transition phase, and LeBron James has always been a keen observer of the evolution within the league. The Los Angeles Lakers star has been there for the last 21 years and has seen a lot of changes happening around him.
The new All-Star game format will feature a tournament-style format comprised of four teams: one from the Rising Stars Challenge and three traditional All-Star teams drafted by well-known former players. LeBron recently voiced his approval for the NBA’s decision to overhaul the 2025 All-Star Game format. According to him, significant changes were necessary due to the declining excitement surrounding the event.
“It’s not just the All-Star Game. It’s our game in general. There’s a lot of f—ing 3s being shot. So it’s a bigger conversation than just the All-Star Game,” James said during a recent conversation.

While James acknowledged that any change is likely to face some backlash, he suggested that the All-Star Game’s transformation is merely a reflection of larger concerns plaguing the league. Past games have been criticized for lack of competitiveness and defense. Take last year’s 211-186 score, which led James to reiterate that the format isn’t the sole issue. The shift represents a broader struggle within the NBA’s structure and style of play.
Beyond the All-Star Game changes, the Akron-born forward pointed to an overreliance on three-point shooting as a significant factor affecting the quality of the game and its viewership. The NBA has seen teams attempt record numbers of three-pointers.

James’ all-time regular-season minutes stand at 57,437. He is just 10 minutes away from passing NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem has the most minutes played in the regular season in NBA history, i.e., 57,446 minutes. However, James, with 69,296 all-time minutes, already passed Abdul-Jabbar, who had 66,297 all-time minutes, for the most minutes all-time between the regular season and playoffs combined on Nov. 27, 2023.
During the discussion, James expressed his pride in his ability to stay healthy and be available for his team throughout his long career. He believes that his hard work in training has helped him remain active on the court. Although he usually prefers not to rest during games, he is open to the idea if it helps him perform better in the long run.
