LeBron James, widely regarded as the greatest player in NBA history, has achieved several remarkable feats in his professional career. Some of his key achievements include four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, four Finals MVP awards, and 20 NBA All-Star selections.
James, who recently slammed Caitlin Clark’s haters, added another achievement to his list by being honored as the 2024 Paris Olympics MVP after winning his third Olympic gold medal. However, the all-time points leader still believes that simply being a great player is not enough for him to be remembered.
As the time of his retirement nears, the 39-year-old is frequently asked about his retirement plans and his future. During a recent appearance on The Shop podcast presented by Nike, James, the Los Angeles Lakers star, expressed his thoughts on how he wants to be remembered.
“From time to time, I do think about how I want to be remembered, and I hope that it’s not just the game of basketball. You know, I feel like if it’s just the game of basketball, that people, you know, talk about me in the sense of I think I’ve kind of failed my mission.” James said.
James, who is often compared to Michael Jordan, mentioned that his legacy is not just about basketball. If that were the case, he would have failed in his mission.
James Emphasizes The Importance Of Contributing To His Community
James led the Lakers to the NBA playoffs in the previous season with a number of incredible performances. Despite his abilities, the team lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.

The 39-year-old further emphasized the importance of doing things for his friends, family, hometown, and community, stating that these are the values that should define his legacy.
“The things that I do in my community, the way myself and Savannah raised our kids, my relationship with my single-parent mother, my friendship with my guys, and being able to help my people from my hometown. If those conversations don’t hit the barbershops, don’t hit the forums, or whatever the case may be, then I feel like my mission wasn’t completed. I’m still not done. I am old as f**k in basketball terms. But I am young in life. I still have so much more work to do. I am still building my blocks.” James added.
James believes that he is still not done with his work. He mentioned that he is old in basketball but young in life, which allows him to do more for his community. However, fans will still have another opportunity to see the legend’s dominance on the court, as James recently signed a contract extension with the Lakers.
In addition, his son, Bronny James, was also drafted by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA draft. It will be fascinating for the fans to see the father-son duo playing together.
