Klay Thompson was one of the most hyped free agents before agreeing to a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. The former Golden State Warriors guard was approached by several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers. Thompson was reportedly given a four-year, $80 million contract by the Lakers to sign with them. However, he declined to sign with the Mavericks.
After his contract with the Mavericks, Klay Thompson’s dad, Mychal Thompson, expressed his disappointment in an interview. He mentioned that he had expected Klay to accept the Lakers’ offer because Klay had grown up watching his favorite team, the Lakers, and his favorite player, Kobe Bryant. However, Thompson further mentioned that Klay is a grown man and knows what is best for him. He added that he can only advise Klay, but the decision is ultimately up to him.
However, during his first press conference after joining Dallas, Thompson was asked about his dad’s displeasure.
“Yeah, my dad was disappointed…At the end of the day, he was happy for me. I was like, ‘Dad I’ve been in California my whole life. I gotta experience something new. He was a little selfish in his business interests because he wanted me to be home with the family. So he understood, and he’s actually really excited for me, and he thinks we have a great shot to do something special here,” Thompson said.
Thompson Emphasizes the Importance of Moving From Warriors to Mavericks
During the same interview, Thompson also discussed his move from the Warriors to the Mavericks. He emphasized that this transition was important for him.
“You are probably a little disappointed at first, but then as time goes on, you have a lot of time to reflect, and you realize what you did. They can’t take that away from you as far as championships. … the impact you have on the community. That will forever live. Sometimes, breakups are necessary to do what’s right. I’m not the first athlete in the NBA to go through this.” Thompson added.
