The Boston Celtics dominated game 1 of the NBA finals against the Dallas Mavericks, winning 107-89. All the players have given their contribution to the team’s success. However, Celtics guard Jrue Holiday gave some credit to the team’s white players for the victory.
During a post-game interview with NBC Sports, Holiday asked about the mentality of the team for placing different players against Luka Doncic, a star player of the Mavericks, throughout the game. In response, Holiday said that the strategy worked, and different players defended against Doncic. He also mentioned the white players on the team were challenging for Doncic.
“I think it helps a lot, throwing different guys at him. Different guys that play defense differently. Some are aggressive; some are not. But I think even our white guys guard, so hopefully, it’s challenging for him.” Holiday said to the NBC reporters.
Jrue Holiday’s comment amazed the fans
Holiday’s statement made waves on social media, as his interview quickly went viral and sparked a variety of reactions from fans. One fan commented, “He knows Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard were shutting down Luka and Kyrie,” while another fan pondered, “Imagine if the roles were reversed.” Yet another fan came to Doncic’s defense and took a shot at the Celtics by saying, “I swear he [Doncic] doesn’t even know their names.” Additionally, a fourth fan raised an important point, stating, “The only thing I don’t like about this is that if Pritchard or Hauser had said ‘even our black guys guard,’ I’m not sure the black community would be too happy with that.”
During the game, Holiday made a significant impact, scoring 12 points, providing 5 assists, and grabbing 8 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown, the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, once again dominated the game with 22 points, 2 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Additionally, Celtics’ star player Jayson Tatum finished with 16 points, 5 assists, and 11 rebounds during his 42 minutes on the court. As for the opponent, the Mavericks, Doncic stunned everyone with his 30 points, 1 assist, and 10 rebounds. However, due to poor team support and the strong defense of the Celtics, Doncic’s efforts fell short and the Mavericks lost the game 1. However, During an interview after the game, Doncic shared the mentality during the game.
The second game of the NBA Finals is scheduled for Sunday at the TD Garden.
