The Golden State Warriors trio, including Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson, was broken up after the departure of star guard Thompson. The star shooting guard became a free agent after the team’s loss in the Play-In tournament during the 2023-24 NBA season. The 34-year-old received interest from multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, but ultimately joined the Dallas Mavericks.
Following his departure, several Warriors players paid tribute to him. However, Green made a surprising statement about Thompson’s exit from the team. On a recent episode of the Club 520 Podcast, the 34-year-old power forward mentioned that Thompson provided cap relief for the organization as he left. He also expressed his happiness about Thompson’s departure, stating that he did not enjoy seeing Thompson the way he was last year.
“He provided cap relief for this organization on his way out. Got some picks sent back to the organization on his way out. And I believe in second-round picks. I have no choice but to believe in second-round picks. So I’m happy for him. I’m happy he left because I did not enjoy at all seeing him the way I saw him last year,” Green said (31.13 min).
Green Disappointed with Thompson’s New Jersey Number
In July 2024, Thompson was traded to the Mavericks as part of a sign-and-trade deal involving six teams after playing 13 seasons with the Warriors. He secured a new three-year contract worth $50 million as part of the agreement. Later, during a press conference, the four-time NBA Champion also revealed his Dallas jersey, which includes the number 31.
However, Green, who never shy away from making fun of his teammates, was unsatisfied with Thompson’s new jersey number and expressed disappointment during the same interview.
“It’s disgusting, it’s nasty. Somebody said to me, ‘Yo, 31, that’s Reggie Miller’s number.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but he’s Klay Thompson. Festus tried to go at me on Instagram, like, ‘What’s wrong with 31?’ …You wore it.” Green said.
