Bronny James has become the hottest topic of discussion among basketball enthusiasts. The 19-year-old son of Lakers’ star LeBron James was selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. Since his pick, all the spotlights have fallen on the young guard. While many have criticized the Lakers’ move and called it “nepotism,” some have praised it and extended their support for Bronny. The latest is former guard Austin Rivers, who is accustomed to the taste of such bitter remarks.
Bashing the critics on the “Off Guard” show, Rivers said, “People are so caught up in, ‘Well, he’s only going because…’ Okay, so what? Who cares? It doesn’t mean he can’t become a good player. Just because he’s getting drafted because of his dad doesn’t mean he can’t play basketball or won’t become a pro eventually.” (After 4:00)
Many have claimed that Bronny got the spot in the franchise because he is the offspring of LeBron James. Austin, the son of Bucks HC Doc Rivers, has faced backlash during his time on the hardwood. So, he came to defend the 19-year-old.
Now that Bronny has a fixed spot on the LA team, the focus is on the 39-year-old. LBJ hasn’t confirmed his contact situation yet, but there are reports that he might consider taking a pay cut for his son.
LeBron James Might Take Pay Cut to Play With Bronny James
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin broke the news that LeBron James has preferred opting out of his last year’s $51.4 million contract with the LA franchise.
The Lakers recently offered him a contract worth $160 million, but it appears that LeBron wants to push it further. The 4-time champion, instead of entering free agency, has decided to stay with his current team and could re-sign a max $162 million contract later.
