San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama amazed everyone in his debut season with several dominating performances. Due to his stellar display of skills, he was named the 2024 Rookie of the Year. His dominance continued into the offseason as he was selected to represent France at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Unfortunately, despite Wembanyama’s efforts, the Spurs failed to clinch the title, and France also fell short of clinching the gold medal. As the new NBA preseason started, Wembanyama shared his experiences from both the NBA and international competitions.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Wembanyama mentioned that an Olympic gold medal would mean more to him than an NBA championship.
“Olympic gold medal would mean the most right now because you can win way less in a career. It’s very much more rare,” the French center said.
Wembanyama’s statement sparked a debate among basketball fans, who began sharing their thoughts in the comments section of NBA Central’s post on X (formerly Twitter). One fan commented, “As an American, NBA championship means more. But as a French, it is definitely debatable between the two.”

Another fan wrote, “Well it’s true, Olympics every 4 years vs nba championship every year.”
Another fan commented, “More rare if you’re not playing for the USA.”
A sports enthusiast said, “NBA titles are great, but the Olympics are historic!”
Victor Wembanyama Praises Kevin Durant For His Inspiring Influence
Further in the interview, Wembanyama spoke about his experiences playing against some of the biggest stars in the NBA. Wemby confidently mentioned that he didn’t find it difficult to match up against the superstars. However, he made a point of expressing his deep respect for the skills and abilities of Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant.
“There are active players that I admire. Some of the guys I admired growing up, I’m not disappointed, but I’m like, ‘That’s it?’ But some of them, talking like KD…it’s really inspiring, I want to do the same as them.” Wembanyama said.
Wembanyama, recently praised by a Boston Celtics legend, has started his second NBA season. It will be thrilling to observe his remarkable skills and dominance on the court.
