Donovan Mitchell’s current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which sees him set to earn over $35 million for the upcoming 2024-25 season, is nearing its expiration. Meanwhile, Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman expressed optimism about Mitchell’s future with the team.
Altman hinted at a potential contract extension. He noted Mitchell’s positive mental state, good health, and strong commitment to the Cavaliers’ objectives.
“We feel good about Donovan. He’s in a great space mentally, he’s healthy, he’s really invested in what we’re doing, and hopefully soon we’ll have more of a decisive answer on (a contract extension). But he’s been great,” Altman said.
Mitchell becomes eligible to negotiate a multiyear extension this summer. Reports suggest the Cavaliers are prepared to offer Mitchell a substantial contract extension. The deal may be worth up to $209 million over four years, as they see him as “very much pro-Cleaveland.”
“He’s been super involved and super collaborative and very, very much pro-Cleveland,” Altman added.

According to a recent report from Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers view Mitchell as a pivotal addition to bolster their roster. Amick noted that Mitchell is the sole player the Lakers would consider trading Austin Reaves and three first-round draft picks for.
“They don’t see – other than Donovan Mitchell who does not appear to be available. They don’t appear to see a player who is worth giving up Austin, giving up the three firsts and being a game-changer and dealing with that salary that would likely kick them over into the second apron,” Amick reported.
Mitchell’s market value has skyrocketed, making him a coveted asset in the league. For the Cavaliers, Mitchell’s potential departure could be costly, requiring him to secure a lucrative contract extension without delay.
