French basketball icon Tony Parker is set to be forever immortalized by his national team. In a grand tribute to his illustrious career, the French national team will officially retire his iconic number 9 jersey during an exhibition game against Serbia in Lyon.
This prestigious honor comes just days before the French men’s basketball teams begin their Olympic quest in Paris. Parker, widely considered the greatest French basketball player of all time, will be celebrated for his immense contributions to the sport.
Over the course of his 18-year career, Tony scored many points and even helped the French team win a gold medal. After his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, BeBasket stated last year that the FFBB would retire his jersey during a 2024 Olympics exhibition match in Lyon.
The ceremony will be held on July 12th at the LDLC Arena in Lyon after France’s pre-Olympic exhibition match against Serbia. When Parker’s number 9 is hoisted to the skies, a momentous chapter in the country’s basketball history will be written.
Parker captained the French national team to a historic EuroBasket gold medal in 2013, where he was also named the tournament’s MVP and top scorer. He also led France to a silver medal in the 2011 EuroBasket and bronze medals in 2005 and 2015.
Tony’s resume speaks for itself. He boasts a glittering NBA career, winning four championships with the San Antonio Spurs and earning Finals MVP honors in 2007. However, his achievements on the international stage are equally impressive.
