Minnesota Timberwolves’ center Rudy Gobert is used to towering over people with his gigantic 7-foot-1 frame.
But when it came to meeting with soon-to-be NBA 2023 first overall pick Victor Wembanyama, who measures 7-foot-4 (7-foot-5 in shoes)? Gobert looks totally average in size. Have a look for yourself:
The San Antonio Spurs were the lucky winners of the Wembanyama draft sweepstakes earlier this week. The 19-year-old Wembanyama has been hyped as the greatest basketball prospect since LeBron James, who went first overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003.
This marks the third time in history where the Spurs will pick first overall. They drafted a pair of future Hall of Famers with those two selections in David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997), who set the path for a dynasty that would win five championships between 1999 and 2014.
San Antonio qualified for the postseason every year from 1998 to 2019, but they have missed out on the postseason in four consecutive years. The Spurs have lost 39 games or more every season during that span, finishing a woeful 22-60 here in 2022-23.
Gobert, a three-time All-Star, finished up his first season in Minnesota following a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year helped the Timberwolves to the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, but the top-seeded Denver Nuggets eliminated them in the opening round.
