With his arrival in the league, Zion Williamson has broken the notion of bulky guys not making it in the NBA. There have been many criticisms regarding his physical appearance but even more praise, about his freakishly athletic talent, despite being on the heavier side. While many believed there were none like him, LA Clippers’ star Paul George proved them wrong by naming his former teammate.
On a recent episode of “Podcast P”, George stated, “My time in Oklahoma City, there was a kid named Deonte Burton. You probably don’t know who he is. I used to ask ‘ Why don’t we play him?’, I swear. I used to be like ‘Why don’t we give him minutes?’ because he played some games where guys went down and they’d plug him in garbage time or plug him in spurt moments. But, I used to see him in practice and his G League games. He was like Zion before Zion.”
Before joining the LA franchise, PG-13 spent two seasons (2017-2019) at the OKC Thunder. Burton came into the picture in 2018. George is right in admitting that Burton got very little time on the hardwood to display his abilities.
The young forward stayed with the OKC for more than a season and then mostly played in the G-League. Although he crawled back and was given a chance by the Kings in 2023, when he appeared only for two games. Burton finished his not-so-impressive NBA career with averages of 2.5 points and 1.2 rebounds but succeeded in making an impression on George.
Moving forward to the future, George is frequently in the headlines for the speculations around his potential prospects. After the Sixers, the veteran has been linked up with the Warriors.
