The Philadelphia 76ers successfully kept veteran guard Kyle Lowry this offseason despite interest from several teams, including the Phoenix Suns. The New York Knicks, also known as the “Villanova Knicks,” did not show any interest in Lowry. However, the 38-year-old point guard recently made a lighthearted remark about the Knicks’ decision.
Lowry joked about the notion that the New York Knicks “didn’t want” him during free agency while participating in the American Century Championship on Sunday. A video of Lowry playing golf went viral due to the joke. While playing golf on Sunday, an announcer gave a lengthy introduction for Lowry and mentioned him joining the Villanova Knicks next year. In response, Lowry humorously quipped that the Knicks didn’t want him.
“They didn’t want me,” Lowry said after the introduction.

After signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, Lowry talked about his trade in a recent interview. He said it’s an opportunity for him to play for his hometown of Philadelphia and for coach Nick Nurse of the 76ers once more. He also lauded the 76ers’ roster, saying that, at this time, it was the best fit for him.
“To play for Coach [Nick] Nurse again, represent my city, and also get an opportunity to play for a championship with a good group … I just think we’ve got a great opportunity to get better, and I felt like it was the best place for me at this moment,” Lowry commented prior to his opening round performance at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort’s American Century Championship celebrity event.
Lowry, who won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, is widely regarded as one of the greatest Raptors players of all time. According to StatMuse, the six-time All-Star averaged 8.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in his 23 games for the 76ers in the 2023-24 season.
