NBA legend Michael Jordan’s father, James Jordan, was murdered in July 1993 on a North Carolina highway while sleeping in his car. Two teenagers, Daniel Green and Larry Demery, were accused and later convicted of the crime. However, retired Judge Gregory Weeks, who handled the 1996 murder trial, has shockingly asked the parole commission to release Green.
Daniel Green was found guilty of first-degree murder in the mid-90s and sentenced to life imprisonment. Green’s conviction was made sure by Larry Demery, who testified against Green, claiming he was the shooter. Almost 30 years later, Judge Weeks petitioned the parole officials on Tuesday to release Green, who was 18 at the time of the crime.
The retired Judge admitted he was haunted by this case and offered concern over the legitimacy of evidence. Weeks claimed the forensic blood expert provided the inconclusive blood test results from apparent blood in the car.
Michael Jordan’s Father’s Murder Convict Reacts To Judge Weeks’ Request
In his statement to the parole commission, Green expressed his deep remorse for his involvement in the murder. “Every day, I live with the remorse and the pain and the suffering caused by my youthful decisions. I regret the harm my actions inflicted on the Jordan family,” he wrote.
“It speaks volumes about this case, and I’m overwhelmingly grateful,” Green told ABC, reacting to the judge’s request. Rev. Thomas Jones, a known criminal justice advocate, expressed his pleasure with the Weeks’ plea. “When I heard the judge speak on his behalf, I was weeping. I was flabbergasted,” he said.
The decision on Green’s release in the near future depends on the state’s parole commission. On the other hand, Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan, who took his first break from the NBA after 1993, has not commented on Judge Weeks’ request.
