If you’re like thousands, if not millions of other Kobe Bryant fans, you are still in disbelief that the Lakers legend actually lost his life in a helicopter crash on January 26th alongside his daughter and seven others.
That has led to many fans combing through YouTube videos to try and find out what could have possibly happened on that helicopter to cause it to crash into a hillside as they made their way to the Mamba Sports Academy.
That eventually brought thousands of people to a YouTube channel called, The Flight Channel. Titled, “Helicopter Crashes North of Los Angeles | Here’s What Really Happened to N72EX,” the video prefectly recreated what possibly happened to the doomed helicopter on that fateful day.
Just one check of the comments and you’ll see many references to ‘spatial disorientation’ which is defined as the inability of a pilot to correctly interpret aircraft attitude, altitude or airspeed in relation to the Earth or other points of reference.
Basically, Kobe’s pilot likely thought he was at flying level, but was so disoriented to the point he was actually descending at a rapid pace. The fog did not help and he likely did not see that hillside until it was way too late, which would explain why it was described by the NTSB as a ‘high energy impact.’

“KOBE DIED OF SD. SD is spatial disorientation and his pilot relied on inner ear sensation instead of instruments for pitch and rate of turn info. The sudden pull up into pure blinding fog caused him to turn hard left and go steep nose down. The Louisiana Cheyenne crash was the same thing…steep descending left hand turn after entering clouds.
This phenomena is known as SD is is a huge killer of both airplane and helicopter pilots alike. The pilot of that S-76 hit the ground and never saw it coming, and he had no idea what his actual pitch and bank were at that time. Unknowns at this time are just how IFR savvy the guy was and if he was even capable of single pilot IFR or not. Still yet TBD.”
