Joel Embiid, despite not being a native-born American, chose to represent Team USA in the Paris Olympics over France or Cameroon. This decision has not been well received by some French fans, who have responded with boos and heckling during Team USA’s games.
However, Embiid is undeterred by the negative reaction. Speaking to reporters after Friday’s practice, he shared his plans for dealing with the French crowd in the upcoming game.
“It’s all about Team USA against France, but I know myself; I’m going to interact myself, and I’m going to enjoy it. They’re going to boo me. I’m going to go back at them and tell ’em to suck it. And so it’s going to be fun,” Embiid said.
Embiid’s decision to play for Team USA has proven to be a game changer. His performance has been crucial throughout the Olympics, including the semifinal game against Serbia, where he scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field.
Why Did Joel Embiid Pick Team USA Despite French Citizenship?
Joel Embiid became a French citizen in 2022 and then a USA citizen later that same year. Later, he surprised many by choosing to play for Team USA in the Paris Olympics instead of representing France. After Team USA’s victory over Puerto Rico, Embiid addressed his choice to join Team USA.
“It was a tough decision, but it is all about comfort level. I’ve known these guys [Team USA players] for a long time, and I just felt more comfortable than on the other side [France]. There was some concern with the other side. Comfort level was huge. I always say I’m going to be where I’m wanted, and these guys wanted me,” he said.
