LeBron James stole many of his fans hearts when reports surfaced about his willingness to take a significant pay cut to help accommodate veteran players on the Los Angeles Lakers roster. Initial skepticism arose when it appeared James might not follow through on his intentions. However, clarity emerged when he officially re-signed with the Lakers on Saturday.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, LeBron James agreed to a two-year, $101.35 million contract with the Lakers. Despite being eligible for a maximum contract of $104 million, the 39-year-old opted to take a nearly $3 million pay cut to keep the Lakers below the NBA’s second apron.
“LeBron James’ final two-year deal total, per sources: $101.355 million—almost $3 million less than his $104 million max, placing the Lakers below the second apron,” Charania reported.
Following a disappointing season for the Lakers, the four-time championship winner took it upon himself to spearhead efforts in restructuring the team’s roster. He reportedly pursued Klay Thompson to join the Lakers before Thompson ultimately signed with the Dallas Mavericks.
Later, the Lakers turned their attention to acquiring DeMar DeRozan, initiating third-party trade discussions involving D’Angelo Russell. Despite their efforts, DeRozan opted to join the Sacramento Kings over the Lakers.
