LeBron James has been chasing greatness since the moment he stepped onto an NBA court. In the eyes of many, the pinnacle of that greatness is embodied by Michael Jordan, widely regarded as the GOAT. While several players have tried to reach Jordan’s level, only James has come close enough to spark serious debate.
A recent story shared by former NBA player Rashad McCants offers a rare glimpse into James’s mindset during the early days of his career. Speaking on a recent episode of “Gil’s Arena,” McCants recounted a tale when James shared his determination to surpass Jordan.
“This comes from a high-table source, who told me they had a conversation after the 2005 season. Playin’ bourre with Bron—a bunch of motherf—ers on the table, and Bron just happened to say some sh*t randomly: ‘Man, I’m trying to make that other No. 23 disappear.’ The guy who told me looked up, looked at everybody else at the table, said, ‘Good luck, young fella,’” McCants said.
