After starting his NBA career as the 11th overall pick in 2011, Klay Thompson spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors before moving to the Dallas Mavericks this season. Now, for the first time, he faced his former team as an opponent in their NBA Cup opener at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Before the high-voltage game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr opened up about Thompson’s move to Dallas during an exclusive interview with Anthony Slater of The Athletic. Surprisingly, Kerr went on to express his belief that Thompson made the right decision for his career to get a fresh start.
“There’s always stuff as a coach that, you know, you look back and you go, ‘Man, I wish I had done this or said that. But there’s nothing that keeps me up at night. Everybody’s life and career arc is different,” Kerr said.
“I think Klay made the right decision going to Dallas. Just seeing him the last couple of years, I think he needed a fresh start,” he added.
Klay Thompson Reflects On Leaving Warriors To Pursue A New Chapter
During an interview with Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Klay Thompson opened up about how he chose to move on from the team with which he had built a legacy. Thompson explained that he felt it was time to start a new chapter, one that could reignite his drive.
“I just, like, freely thought about it at the end. I was like, ‘Do I have more to give [the Warriors] or would going somewhere else motivate me to add a new chapter to my legacy? And that’s what I decided on. And I haven’t looked back since,” Thompson said.
