The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a shaky start this preseason after a disappointing previous season. LeBron James and his team lost their first two preseason games. The losses remind the Lakers that they need more depth in their roster to return to their championship caliber.
Despite these early setbacks, many believe in the Lakers’ potential, including sports commentator Stephen A. Smith. During his appearance on First Take at Tennessee State University, Smith made a bold claim that the Lakers are more of a threat this season than the Memphis Grizzlies.
“I will say no; they are not a bigger threat than the Los Angeles Lakers. I think LeBron is gonna continue to do his thing, Anthony Davis is gonna continue to do his thing. JJ Redick is gonna surprise a lot of people with how exceptional he’s gonna do as a coach,” Smith said.
“Ja Mornt is going to wreak havoc. But I don’t think Memphis has enough,” he added.
The Lakers suffered a 107-124 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first game. Then they fell 114-118 to the Phoenix Suns in their second, even with LeBron and his son Bronny James playing. The Lakers saw success in their third game against the Milwaukee Bucks, winning a 102-107 game against them.
Los Angeles Lakers Eye Roster Reinforcements After Preseason Struggles

“The Lakers have been exploring potentially adding a big man, a center, to their roster. Not sure exactly when that will take place, but they have started looking into the marketplace. Christian Wood remains sidelined with a knee issue; he had surgery recently, and they’re waiting for his return. In the interim, Jaxson Hayes has stepped up during training camp and has been a positive factor for the Lakers,” the report read.
The Lakers will face their next test on October 15, when they play against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers fans will watch closely to see if the team can improve and if a new addition to the roster will help bolster their chances this season.
