Space Jam appears to have foreshadowed the NBA shutting down the league in 2020 after the league announced that Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus.
Soon after the news, social media users were quick to point out a plot in the 1996 film where the NBA season was also suspended after players like Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing appeared to be infected with a mysterious illness that took their talents.
“After meeting with team owners, I have decided that until we can guarantee the health and safety of our NBA players, there will be no more basketball this season,” the NBA commissioner says in one scene.
Players in the movie also refused to enter their locker room over a fear of “germs.” Fast forward today and many athletes were not allowed to enter locker rooms because of fear of the coronavirus.
“Space Jam” was released on VHS on March 11, 1997 — do the math, and that’s 23 years to the day of the NBA suspended the 2019-2020 season.
