Despite Team USA’s victory in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Shaquille O’Neal is not delighted with their performance. On “The BIG podcast,” he stated that he anticipates Team USA outplaying every opponent in every game.
Shaq has a narrow perspective on the world; anything short of complete dominance is seen as a failure. And although Team USA technically won the Olympic competition this summer, he symbolized failure for them.
Shaq said, “I’m not even paying attention to the Olympics. [I have a dominant personality. I don’t care how you are, whatever, my cousin Kenny just had this argument upstairs. My cousin said, ‘The world is getting close’ but I don’t think it is. The fact that [USA Basketball won] 97-95, you only beat South Sudan by one [possession]. Come on, bro. That’s never supposed to happen.”
The USA had enjoyed a significant competitive advantage since 1992 when FIBA regulations were altered to permit players at the NBA level. Given that basketball is mainly played in the United States, the country has long held a stranglehold on the sport, beginning with the ‘Dream Team’ and continuing through the current squad with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant. For “Dunk Week,” the LA Lakers’ official X Twitter shared a 30-second video featuring some of his greatest poster smashes. It features his best plays, such as when he punished opponents who attempted to stop him in addition to the rim.
O’Neal amassed a lengthy list of honors throughout his prosperous tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers. After departing the Orlando Magic in free agency, he signed with the venerable team in 1996.
