During a recent episode of Run it Back on Fanduel TV, the NBA analyst and insider for The Athletic Shams Charania was asked about his opinion on Dan Hurley’s rejection of the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching offer. Charania said his source was accurate about the Lakers’ next head coach.
“My sources have said that JJ Redick has been the frontrunner for this job. James Borrego and JJ Redick have also been among the leaders for this job.” Charania said when asked about his opinion. “But when you think about the process so far, Rob Pelinka has met. Before this Dan Hurley situation, he met twice with two candidates… Last week on Wednesday, they turned their attention to Dan Hurley.”

Charania stated that Dan Hurley was not the top candidate for the position from the beginning of the search.
“He was not the No. 1 candidate, the No. 1 guy to go pursue from the start, from the beginning, but they felt like there was an opening there for him. He was in contract negotiations with UConn, and he was discussing a deal to go back. They felt like there was an opening, and they threw what people around the league believe was a hail mary offer at him.” Charania continued.
“So when you think about it, the Lakers are two and a half weeks out from the NBA Draft, they’re three weeks away from free agency, and there is no coach yet. I think everyone around the league doesn’t really have a great feel for where this process is at.” Charania added.

After the Lakers fired Darvin Ham, Charania reported that JJ Redick was considered the top candidate to take over as the next head coach. However, ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski later introduced Hurley as a new candidate, stating that he presented a “compelling case” and offered a “compelling vision” for the team. Despite this, Hurley ultimately turned down the Lakers’ $70 million offer and chose to stay at UConn for $20 million less. This has reignited rumors about Redick, and fans are curious about who the next Lakers head coach will be.
