When the Los Angeles Clippers traded Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 as part of the deal to acquire Paul George, many viewed it as a gamble for the young guard. Moving from Los Angeles, one of the NBA’s largest markets, to Oklahoma City, one of the smallest, could have been a challenge for any player accustomed to the bright lights. However, for Shai, the transition has been nothing short of a fresh start.
The Thunder star has not only adapted to life in Oklahoma City but has also embraced the community and fans who have supported him throughout his journey. This mutual love has created an environment where the young guard has flourished, both on and off the court.
After the Thunder’s narrow 129-122 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, Gilgeous-Alexander addressed the age-old question of whether market size still matters to NBA stars. In his postgame comments, Shai expressed a genuine love for Oklahoma City and dismissed the notion that a smaller market diminishes his experience or career aspirations.
“I love Oklahoma City. I can’t see a world where I’m not in OKC. Market, no market. I don’t care, I love where I am. I go to work every day with a smile on my face. The money doesn’t matter to a certain extent. As long as I enjoy what I’m doing at a very high level, love the people that I’m around doing it, the market doesn’t matter to me,” Shai said.

The Thunder is one of the league’s smallest-market franchises, with less than 1.5 million homes in their broadcast audience. Yet, Shai’s love for OKC proves that a player’s happiness and performance aren’t tied to the size of their market.

Despite the 129-122 loss, the Thunder continue to lead the Western Conference with a league-best 30-6 record. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showcased his all-around brilliance, logging 38 minutes on the court and contributing 31 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The Cavaliers proved why they are a top contender in the East, putting forth a balanced offensive effort. Six of their players scored in double figures. Jarrett Allen was the main hero, recording 25 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.
