Since his rookie season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Russell Westbrook has been synonymous with the No. 0 jersey. However, as he began his new chapter with the Denver Nuggets, reportedly he had to relinquish this number to Christian Braun, who was already wearing it.
The decision sparked an outcry from some NBA fans, who directed their frustration toward Braun. After seeing the backlash, Westbrook stepped in to defend his new teammate. In an Instagram story, Westbrook addressed the critics, making it clear that there was no conflict over the jersey number.
“Let’s please leave our young star alone. CB and I never discussed him passing along the number 0. I didn’t want, inquire about, or request the number 0 because I chose to mark this new change with a “new” number,” Westbrook wrote.
“The excitement of the new season has already begun, and unfortunately I know that means the offload of many false stories. Not today! CB and I are locked in and ready to get things rockin’ in the mile high city!” he added.
