Just like his close friend Klay Thompson, Chris Paul’s future with the Golden State Warriors remains uncertain. Reports suggest that if Paul leaves the Bay Area, free agency could see him teaming up with LeBron James. NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to pursue him if Paul enters free agency.
“The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to try to sign Chris Paul this offseason,” Stein reported.
Paul and LeBron James have been close friends for years, but they have never played together on the same NBA team. If Paul leaves the Warriors, their off-court friendship could finally become an on-court partnership. Nevertheless, it’s not the first time that the Lakers emerge as the top contender for Paul.
Paul has a $30 million non-guaranteed salary for the 2024–25 season, making it possible for the Warriors or another team to waive him. This scenario allows the Lakers to sign him as a free agent. Given the Lakers’ current roster and need for a veteran point guard, Paul’s addition could significantly bolster their lineup.
Warriors Head Coach Advocates for Chris Paul’s Return
The Golden State Warriors acquired Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards last offseason. Though it has only been a year, the 12-time NBA All-Star guard’s relationship with the Warriors appears to be nearing an end. However, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is keen on retaining him.
Following the Warriors’ season-ending play-in loss to the Sacramento Kings, Kerr publicly expressed his support for Paul.

“Chris has been fantastic, not only on the court but the leadership. He is one of our best players. I love coaching Chris (Paul). I really hope we bring him back next year,” Kerr said.
During his lone season with the Warriors, Paul averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game across 58 appearances.
