It appears that the LA Lakers are prepared to bid to hire Dan Hurley, the head coach of the University of Connecticut, as their next head coach. An NBA source, Anthony Irwin, claims that the team is getting ready to extend an eight-year, $100 million contract to Hurley in exchange for the head coaching job.
Prior to Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN revealed last night that Hurley would meet with the team. The two-time NCAA champion met with team owners Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka on Friday to discuss the possibility of hiring.
Though neither party has confirmed the rumors, Hurley is now the front-runner to replace Darvin Ham, who was fired from the team after two seasons due to the team’s unfortunate two-year run at elimination by the Denver Nuggets.
The organization was initially more interested in hiring former NBA player JJ Redick as its head coach. However, it turned its attention to Hurley earlier this week. If Hurley is hired, he will become the team’s 27th head coach once they enter the NBA.
Many Analysts Are Disagreeing With Dan Hurley Joining the Lakers
It is never simple for any team to find a new head coach. It’s even more challenging for the Lakers, who hope to contend for a championship. The organization has had difficulty finding a coach to help them compete for titles. So the hiring process has been complicated.
The crew had previously discussed having Redick head the group, and several approved the concept. Not everyone, though, agreed. Three-time champion Rick Fox, who was a member of the California squad, was against the notion.

Fox expressed worries since Redick hasn’t coached at the professional or collegiate levels, and Hurley has won college titles. He acknowledged that the Lakers could struggle to contend for championships under a coach lacking expertise.
