Much uncertainty has surrounded Russell Westbrook’s potential future with the Los Angeles Clippers. After his 2023–24 season performance, many feel his time with the franchise could be running short, and the Clippers have no plans to use Westbrook next season. However, another Western Conference contender is reportedly eyeing the veteran point guard.
The Los Angeles Clippers have been reportedly preparing for the transfer of nine-time NBA All-Star Westbrook for weeks now. On Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic said the Clippers are trying to trade Westbrook. If he hits free agency, the Denver Nuggets would be among the teams interested in signing him. However, no deal has been officially confirmed.
In his latest newsletter, Charania revealed, “The Clippers and Russell Westbrook plan to part ways this offseason, and the franchise continues to discuss trades for the former NBA MVP, team and league sources said. The Denver Nuggets are a front-runner to sign Westbrook if he becomes a free agent.”
This inside report surprises many. With Nikola Jokic’s powerful offense, the Nuggets are not a 100% match for Westbrook’s high-usage style. Still, Denver might offer Westbrook a chance to thrive.
Russell Westbrook Chooses to Stay with Only $4 Million Option
Last month, the Los Angeles Clippers guard chose only a $4 million player option to stay with the team for the 2024–25 season. His poor showing in the playoffs likely impacted this decision. Last season, he shot just 26 percent in six games during their early elimination against the Dallas Mavericks.
While serving as James Harden’s backup for most of the season, the 35-year-old averaged 11.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.1 steals. Despite shooting 45.4% from the field, he struggled to convert 27.3% of his three-point attempts, which limited his scoring potential. There is no doubt that the pace of Westbrook’s career has slowed down significantly over the last several years.
