The Detroit Pistons are determined to get back on track after seasons of failure and the only way to do so is by fixing their roster. The one they have reportedly marked to let go is the former No. 2 draft pick, James Wiseman.
Wiseman could enter unrestricted free agency when the market opens. However, according to NBA Insider Evan Sidery, the Pistons are not willing to retain him. Making him available for the other franchises who would want to boost their bench.
“The Pistons will soon renounce James Wiseman making him an unrestricted free agent,” the reporter stated. Then he further added, “Instead of giving Wiseman a 1-year qualifying offer, Detroit prefers to clear more cap space. The former No. 2 overall pick will be an intriguing buy-low option on the veteran’s minimum market.”
Wiseman joined the league in the 2020 Draft with the Golden State Warriors. But he was traded to his current team in 2023 as he couldn’t develop in the Blue and Yellow franchise. Appearing in 63 games for the Pistons, Wiseman averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds, disappointing the team who had high hopes.
The Pistons finished the season right at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table with a 14-68 record. However, this time they made wise decisions in the draft to secure their future.
Who did the Detroit Pistons get in the 2024 NBA draft?
The Detroit Pistons were eager to choose a strong player who could make an impact on the team. On Wednesday night, they acquired the 5th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Ron Holland.

The combo forward played for NBA G-league Ignite and impressed the Pistons with his averages of 19.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game. He also showcased his shooting skills in the season, which was 45.5% from the floor.
The only trouble is that the Pistons have to wait for Holland a bit more, as the 18-year-old forward is recovering from a ruptured tendon in his right thumb. The injury restricted him from taking part in games from the end of January 2024. It’ll be interesting to watch how the Pistons fit him into their strategy in the following season.
