The Los Angeles Lakers appear to have lost their championship edge since their last title in 2020. But after the draft of Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the team remained largely inactive during the offseason, failing to bring in any major talent to support LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Former NBA star Richard Jefferson recently shared his thoughts on the Lakers’ prospects for the upcoming season during a segment on NBA Today. According to Jefferson, the Lakers are still several steps away from being truly competitive in the Western Conference in the upcoming season.
“We put way too much pressure on LeBron and the Lakers. You look at an incomplete team with an incomplete roster. They don’t have enough dogs. The Boston Celtics, the Lakers are three all-star-caliber players away from being on their level,” said Jefferson.
“Three All-Star caliber players—that’s how far the Lakers are away from being on the same tier as the defending champions,” he added.
Los Angeles Lakers Add Christian Koloko to Address Roster Needs
The Los Angeles Lakers had a challenging season last year, finishing with a 47-35 record and landing 7th in the Western Conference. Their playoff run was short-lived, as they were knocked out by the Denver Nuggets in the first round, losing the series in five games.
Despite a tough season and criticism for their inactivity during the offseason, the Lakers have recently made a move to address their roster needs. According to Shams Charania, Koloko is expected to play a role in the Lakers’ frontcourt once he receives clearance from the league’s fitness panel.

Koloko last played for the Toronto Raptors during the 2022–23 season. In his last season, he averaged 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game across 58 appearances. The Lakers hope that Koloko’s addition will provide a boost to their frontcourt and help them improve their performance in the upcoming season.
