Barnes Makes Raptors History in Rookie of the Year Win
The Toronto Raptors surprised NBA fans by selecting Barnes as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft when they had the option of choosing point guard Jalen Suggs. Despite this surprise, Barnes proved to be a valuable investment by winning the Rookie of the Year award. After joining the NBA, Barnes immediately started delivering outstanding performances for the Raptors. He went on to win the Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Raptor to win the award in twenty-three years, the last being in 1999 with Vince Carter and Damon Stoudamire. Not only has he improved as an offensive defender and scorer, but he has also proven himself to be a skilled player capable of covering multiple positions on defense.
During the 20223-24 season, according to StatMuse, Barnes averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists in 60 games. He was selected to play in his first All-Star game and scored 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Additionally, the NBA Commissioner honored Barnes as an injury replacement player for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game when Joel Embiid and Julius Randle suffered injuries during the games.
