Phoenix Suns fans entered free agency hoping that their team would come out with a big name to help the team for the future. They were heavily rumored to be going after D’Angelo Russell to play alongside rising star Devin Booker, but that quickly went away for a strange reason.
According to USA Today, Phoenix did not pursue Russell because they thought he would be a negative influence on Devin Booker off the cort.
“The Suns chose not to pursue Russell despite Devin Booker’s campaign for them to target his close friend, according to league sources familiar with the situation.”
“The Suns apparently felt Russell wouldn’t have been a good influence on Booker off the court.”
The Suns went a different route when they signed veteran point guard Ricky Rubio, who signed a three-year $51 million deal.
Russell is now a member of the Golden State Warriors after they pulled off a sign-and-trade with the Brooklyn Nets.
