Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox has made headlines by turning down a multi-million dollar contract extension from the team this season. Fox, who is now eligible for a max contract, opted to pass on the Kings’ offer.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Fox was offered a three-year, $165 million maximum extension. However, Fox decided to wait before making a commitment, potentially positioning himself for a more lucrative deal next summer. Charania explained the motivation behind Fox’s decision.
“Fox, slated to be a free agent in 2026, has been eligible to sign the three-year deal before the start of the regular season. By waiting for next summer, Fox would open up the possibility of a four-year, $229 million maximum extension with the Kings—or a five-year, $345 million supermax deal should he be named to an All-NBA team,” the report read.
Fox’s decision comes after observing how the Kings managed their roster during the offseason. With the possibility of a larger contract on the horizon, Fox has chosen to wait, keeping his options open as he looks to the future with Sacramento.
De’Aaron Fox Shares High Praise For New Teammate DeMar DeRozan
De’Aaron Fox is entering his eighth season with the Kings. This season marks his first season playing with DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan, who joined the Kings during the offseason, has already made an impression on Fox. The Kings’ star recently shared his thoughts on playing alongside him.
“Bringing in that type of talent, especially guys who are extremely unselfish, you enjoy playing together, and obviously, he makes tough shots as well. But I think it’s definitely a joy playing together, and we know what we need to do. We know what we really need to focus on, and offense isn’t that problem,” Fox said.
