The New York Knicks displayed stellar performances in the 2023-24 regular season, earning a spot in the NBA playoffs. They defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round but were eliminated in the second round by the Indiana Pacers. Many fans were looking forward to the next season but received devastating news about Knicks Center Mitchell Robinson.
According to recent reports by NBA Insider Ian Begley of SNY TV, Robinson is expected to miss the start of the upcoming NBA season. Begley mentioned that Robinson is recovering from offseason ankle surgery and is not likely to return before December 2024 or January 2025.
“SNY sources: Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will not be ready for the start of the regular season. Depending on rehab process, December/January is a target for Robinson’s return, per sources. Robinson is recovering from offseason ankle surgery.” Begley wrote in his latest post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to StatMuse, Robinson averaged 8.5 rebounds, 5.6 points, and 1.2 steals in 31 games this season. Begley also provided an update on the injury status of Knicks power forward Julius Randle, who recently responded to his critics on social media. The NBA insider mentioned that Randle’s rehab had been progressing very well and that he would fully recover before the start of the season.
Knicks Focus on Complete Recovery for Robinson
While the 26-year-old Center’s absence could be a significant setback for the team’s performance, Begley mentioned that the Knicks are more confident about the upcoming season, even without Robinson.
“Knicks and Robinson do not want to rush the rehab process and both want Robinson 100% healthy before his return. NYK internally is confident in the depth and versatility of the team to compete while Robinson is out, per league sources.” Begley added.

Robinson may be out until December, but Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau mentioned in an interview with NBA.com last week that Randle can step in to fill the center position. The Knicks’ performance without Robinson will be intriguing to watch as the upcoming NBA season gets underway.
