Five-time NBA All-Star and three-time champion Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors is getting ready to visit with teams. The Los Angeles Clippers and LA Lakers are expected to battle it out for the swingman, who is about to make his first free agency move.
As free agency got underway, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski said that Klay Thompson was planning to meet with the Lakers, Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers to consider joining them.
According to a different report by Jake Fischer, Thompson may be willing to sign a mid-level contract with either of the LA teams.
Fischer said, “It’s shaping to be a fascinating mid-level market, especially with word circulating among league personnel that Thompson could be willing to take that amount in order to join the Lakers or Clippers.”
As Bobby Marks noted, the Mavericks can give the biggest deal of the four clubs with which Thompson is negotiating because of a $16.1 million trade exception from the Tim Hardaway Jr. transaction. If the 76ers can sign Paul George, they may have $14 million available.
LeBron James has shown his readiness to forgo a pay raise in his new contract so that the Lakers can give Klay Thompson a full mid-level exception worth about $12.9 million annually. The Clippers can likewise offer a comparable sum.
