We are right in the thick of a playoff race between many teams as they position themselves to make a title run and things went and got even crazier on Monday.
Anthony Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, reportedly contacted the New Orleans Pelicans front office and informed them that his client has formally requested to be traded because he has no intention of signing an extension this summer.
Among the teams interested are the Boston Celtics who likely have the dream of adding Davis to go along with Kyrie Irving, but there is a scenario where they might end up with neither.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, “there’s a growing belief of uncertainty that Kyrie Irving will not re-sign with Boston.”
Haynes also reported that the Celtics are “not a top target” for Davis in a possible trade. Irving, who was traded to Boston in 2017 after forcing his way out of Cleveland, had publicly stated that he intended to re-sign with Boston once his current deal expires at the end of the 2018-19 season, but clearly, things have since changed.
Since that October proclamation, Irving has been out into a veteran role on the team and has became increasingly upset over the young players and their inexperience leading to bad play. The five-time All-Star also told the media that he called LeBron James to apologize for his own immaturity during their tenure together.
Trading Irving to the Pelicans is the only way Boston could acquire Davis due to the “Derrick Rose Rule.”
