According to reports following a turbulent season, the Atlanta Hawks might deal star guard Trae Young to begin a rebuild around this year’s No. 1 lottery choice.
Atlanta finished 10th (36-46) and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020 despite hoping to compete in the Eastern Conference. Following the game, many people doubted Young and Dejounte Murray’s ability to get along and demanded that the team break up their star backcourt.
Atlanta Hawks’ disappointing season did have one bright spot, though. They were fortunate to win last month’s NBA draft lottery. Despite having a slight 3.0% probability of doing so, they secured the first choice.
NBA expert Jake Weinbach reports that Atlanta’s lottery victory may make the team more likely to trade Young and rebuild this offseason. According to Weinbach, the three-time All-Star would be amenable to a transfer to a team with greater competition.
Weinbach posted on X: “Trae Young and the Hawks appear to be on the edge of parting ways this offseason. The All-Star guard has expressed a desire to win, but with Atlanta more likely to hit the reset button after landing the No. 1 pick, Young’s new representation under CAA could push for a new home.”
After yet another brilliant offensive season, Trae Young is back. He scored an average of 25.7 points, 10.8 assists, and 3.2 3-pointers on 43.0% shooting across 54 games. His defense is still a vulnerability, though, and some doubt his capacity to be a significant player for a team vying for the title.

Trae Young Might Land in Miami Next Season, as Per Reports
Trae Young is a costly contract player, so dealing with him may be hazardous for contenders, given his defensive shortcomings. Bills Simmons of The Ringer claims that the Miami Heat are one playoff club that needs to take a chance on him.
On Sunday’s “The Bill Simmons Podcast episode,” Simmons suggested moving Young to Miami in exchange. Several draft selections and sharpshooters, Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson, would be sent to Atlanta in the fictitious trade.
Simmons emphasized Young’s possible fit with the Heat’s illustrious championship culture and highlighted how the trade would give the Hawks a reasonable return. Thus, following the Heat’s unexpected run to the NBA Finals last year, Trae Young may be the missing component that will enable them to return to title contention.
