In today’s world of positionless basketball, a point guard is still a crucial part of an NBA team. In fact, this era is mostly run by point guards and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.
These floor generals are the engines that drive their teams to victory. Their playmaking, leadership, and shooting make them invaluable assets, often determining the fate of their teams.
In this list, we will rank all 30 NBA point guards for the 2023-2024 season from worst to first.
30. Tyus Jones – Washington Wizards
Jones was thrust as the Grizzlies starting point guard for a few stretches due to Ja Morant’s suspension. It remains to be seen if he’ll have the same success with the Wizards next season.
29. Colin Sexton – Utah Jazz
After averaging 24.3 PPG a couple of years ago, it felt like Sexton was going to be a star when he landed in Utah last season. He struggled tremendously after a meniscus tear which robbed him of his athleticism.

28. Tre Jones – San Antonio Spurs
The arrival of Victor Wembanyama should boost Jones’ numbers next season. He is a willing passer and could also create shots when needed. While he doesn’t have the potential to be an all-star, he’s expected to become a good player for a long time.
27. Dennis Schröder – Toronto Raptors
It’s hard to imagine that Schröder’s recent success in the FIBA World Cup will translate to a breakout season in the league. He’s already 30 years old and in the middle of his prime. He’s going to have a little more freedom with the Raptors compared to his previous stops in recent years.
26. Mike Conley Jr. – Minnesota Timberwolves
Conley’s play recently declined due to the heavy mileage his body endured when he was drafted out of Ohio in 2007. At 35 years old, he’s still serviceable but nowhere near as productive compared to his prime years.
25. Alex Caruso – Chicago Bulls
With Lonzo Ball continued injury woes, Caruso is tasked to man the point for Chicago next season. While Caruso earned a spot in the All-Defensive First Team last season, he still has an abysmal offensive repertoire which hurts his potential as a player.
24. Spencer Dinwiddie – Brooklyn Nets
Dinwiddie has been playing great the past couple of years for Dallas and Brooklyn but it really feels like he has peaked in terms of basketball production. The good news is that he’ll be expected to produce the same numbers for a few more years.
23. Scoot Henderson – Portland Trail Blazers
After Damian Lillard’s trade to the Milwaukee Bucks, rookie Scoot Henderson will be tasked to lead Portland’s offense next season. He’ll have his ups and downs but the good thing about him is his unlimited potential.
22. Markelle Fultz – Orlando Magic
After nearly being labeled a bust, Fultz finally had a breakout campaign last season with Orlando. He still has a funky jump shot, but he capitalized on his athleticism to get to the rim to score.
21. Russell Westbrook – Los Angeles Clippers
It’s a sad sight that Westbrook is no longer the rim-attacking maniac he once was. Age really slowed him down but the tenacity is still there. He could still put up decent numbers and teams need to be wary of those.
20. D'Angelo Russell – Los Angeles Lakers
Russell’s huge problem is inconsistency. He could perform like an all-star today and score zero points tomorrow. If he fully unlocks his potential, he’s going to be a huge factor for the Lakers next season.
19. Cade Cunningham – Detroit Pistons
Cunningham only played 12 games last year due to injuries. We don’t know yet which version of him will show up next season. But if he’s healthy, there’s no doubt he could be ranked higher on this list.
18. Fred VanVleet – Houston Rockets
VanVleet is a capable scorer in the league. The only knock on his game has been efficiency. He could put up numbers nightly but shoots inefficiently from the field. Expect that his numbers will go up next season with the Rockets.
17. CJ McCollum – New Orleans Pelicans
McCollum has fully embraced the role of point guard in this young Pelicans team. He did an admirable job last season despite playing the shooting guard position in his years with Portland.
16. Tyler Herro – Miami Heat
Herro is more of a scorer than a natural passer for Miami. Gabe Vincent’s departure will somewhat hurt this team but if Herro bounces back from the wrist injury he suffered in last season’s playoffs, then Miami will be a threat again in the east.
15. Jalen Brunson – New York Knicks
Brunson at just the 15th spot tells us how deep this position is in the league right now. Many argued that he was the best player for the Knicks last season and if he sustains his fine play, an all-star berth may loom within the horizon.
14. Darius Garland – Cleveland Cavaliers
Garland was hurt for much of last season which hurt his growth as a player. When healthy, he is one of the best young point guards in the league. Plus, he could drop 50 on any given night if he’s on the groove.
13. LaMelo Ball – Charlotte Hornets
LaMelo missed a good chunk of last season due to injuries. But when healthy, he has the potential to become one of the top 5 best point guards in the league in the near future. He’s solidified himself as Charlotte’s franchise player.
12. Bradley Beal – Phoenix Suns
Beal and Booker will definitely share the point guard duties with Phoenix next season. Beal may run the point for the team but this will be the first time that he’ll be the one who’s facilitating the offense in his career.
11. Tyrese Maxey – Philadelphia 76ers
If Harden is dealt before next season, Maxey will legitimately have a chance to boost his numbers and become Joel Embiid’s running mate. Maxey has the potential to become an all-star in a year or two and Philadelphia needs his game to develop further.
10. Tyrese Haliburton – Indiana Pacers
Haliburton’s ascension came out of nowhere but his potential was already there. He became a surprise all-star last season and Indiana is banking on his progress to go a step further next season.
9. Jrue Holiday – Boston Celtics
While Holiday’s number may not pop out, he may end up the missing piece for Boston’s championship aspirations. He can facilitate, score and defend multiple positions on the floor thus making him a valuable asset for the Celtics.
8. De'Aaron Fox – Sacramento Kings
Fox’s rise last season was a fruitful one for the Kings as he helped them end their playoff drought since 2006. He’s lightning-quick and has developed a knack for knocking down difficult shots with the game on the line.
7. Trae Young – Atlanta Hawks
Young’s inefficiency on offense has resulted in his downfall in these rankings. He’s one of the best scorers in the game but continues to be an afterthought when it comes to the defensive end of the floor. There have been some serious talks about his future in Atlanta in recent years.
6. Jamal Murray – Denver Nuggets
Murray came back strong after suffering an ACL injury a few years ago. He was Denver’s second-best player during their championship run last season. Expect him to crack the all-star team in the West next year.
5. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – Oklahoma City Thunder
Although he was loaded with potential, Shai was often seen as a throw-in for Paul George’s trade a few years ago. His rise was unprecedented and he has all the tools to become a top-five player someday.
4. Damian Lillard – Milwaukee Bucks
Lillard is finally out of Portland. With the Bucks, an Antetokounmpo-Lillard pairing will be a dangerous sight for the league. Both of them are top 10 players in the NBA right now and it makes Milwaukee as one of the championship favorites this year.
3. Ja Morant – Memphis Grizzlies
Morant’s off-the-court antics truly disrupted the team’s meteoric rise last season. When focused, Ja is one of the best players in the league and a future MVP candidate. Everybody’s hoping he could get his act together and avoid unnecessary drama next season.
2. Stephen Curry – Golden State Warriors
Chris Paul may start, but Curry will always be a couple of tiers above him. Even at 35 with four titles under his belt, Curry is still as hungry as ever and will continue to shoot the lights out in order to obtain a 5th championship.
1. Luka Doncic – Dallas Mavericks
Doncic will be the face of the NBA sooner rather than later. It’s quite unfair that the Mavs also have Kyrie Irving on the roster. With a full training camp to build their chemistry, expect Luka and Kyrie to wreak havoc in the NBA next season.
