Even though LeBron James seems not slowing down, he’s 39 years old and is set to turn 40 during next year’s NBA regular season in December. Though it could still be a few years down the road, he will retire at some point, and Luka Doncic may be who the Lakers target when that happens.
According to Kevin O’Connor, the Los Angeles front office will likely pursue Doncic heavily when the time is right.
Of course, though, the Lakers seem interested in just about every superstar regardless of their contract situation, and that’s why many fans are skeptical about this rumor.
“First of all, that ain’t happening. Luka is t turning down a max extension of $500 mill from Dallas. Second, he’s not going to want to come play with a bunch of scrubs. AD will be old at that point,” said one commenter.
“Why do fans believe what Lakers want is what said player wants. Bron wanted to be in LA. Luka doesn’t. He’s most likely going to denver, SA, if he leaves Dallas,” said another.

“For every superstar not on the Lakers, there is an edit of said superstar in a Lakers jersey,” added a third.
However, if this did happen, it would require the Lakers to offer a lot of trade value, and they better be ready to make Doncic one of the highest-paid players in NBA history, if not the most.
Luka Doncic Is Eligible For Record-Breaking Contract
During the 2025 offseason, Docnic can sign a new five-year $346.4 million contract. Of course, if he did, it would make him the highest-paid player in NBA history, making just over $30 million more than Tatum, who recently signed an extension.
Through his six years in the NBA, he’s won Rookie of the Year, been on the first team and All-Star five times, and finished within the top 10 for MVP voting five times.
