Powerade has made a new partner of NBA superstar Ja Morant, but perhaps they’ve jumped the gun on this one.
Morant is, of course, one of the most electrifying pros in today’s game. He’s revived the Grizzlies as a franchise and they look to be well on their way to a third consecutive playoff appearance, now second in the Western Conference.
The point guard is the team’s top scorer and leads them in assists as well. He’s just the type of player companies would love to have as the face of their brand and, on Wednesday, became the first to partner with Powerade in five years.
The sports drink company announced the deal with an impressive ad that captures Ja’s journey to the NBA in a minute. But the timing of the partnership, or at least its unveiling, couldn’t have come at a worse time as reports of the player assaulting a 17-year-old boy and threatening him with a gun surfaced shortly after the video was released.
The Wall Street Journal has obtained police reports that detail an incident that took place last summer in which Morant was accused of punching the teen in the face repeatedly and going to get a gun afterward.
Morant claimed self-defense, but it’s certainly not a good look for one of the best players in the NBA, especially as such reports keep mounting.

Fans absolutely roasted Powerade for their poor timing.
But how could they have known?
