The second-leading active NBA player with the most rebounds, Andre Drummond, has returned to the Philadelphia 76ers for a second tenure after briefly playing with the team in 2022. This time, Drummond secured a multi-year deal during free agency, reuniting with a team where he hopes to make a significant impact once again.
Recently, Drummond made headlines when he appeared on the Run Your Race podcast and shared a surprising story about his approach to rebounding. During the interview, Drummond admitted that early in his career, he intentionally missed shots during games to collect more rebounds and add his name to the NBA’s rebounding ranks.
“I asked one of my boys, I said, ‘Yo, who’s leading the NBA in rebounding right now?’ So it was Dwight Howard. I think he averaged like 12.3. I’m like, hmm, I’m currently averaging 8.9 as a rookie. I can beat that motherfucker. 100%. For sure. I can beat that,” Drummond said.
“So after I realized how like not sexy rebounding was, I said, ‘That’s it. I’m going to be the best rebounder to ever play this game.’ So then I set out to do it,” he added.
Andre Drummond Shares Secrets Behind His Rebounding Mastery
Andre Drummond, who once slammed ESPN for not including him on the historic rebound list, has led the NBA in rebounding four times throughout his career. In a recent appearance on the Run Your Race podcast, Drummond opened up about how he developed his unique skill set over time.
“I didn’t understand the talent I had for it until I got to the NBA. What I noticed, when I started watching guys shoot, I would know where their misses would come off. So that’s when I knew I have a different outlook of what rebounding is. Some of it is God-given and some of it is a lot of work that I put in,” Drummond said.

In his second stint with the 76ers, Drummond hopes to bring that same level of dominance to help his team succeed. However, in their fifth and final preseason game against the Orlando Magic, the 76ers fell short, losing 114-99. This defeat gave the Sixers a 2-3 record to end the preseason.
