Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, both drafted third overall in consecutive years, have solidified their status as one of the NBA’s most dynamic duos. Over the years, their bond has grown stronger, with Tatum stating that he won’t allow anyone to come between them.
In response to Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd’s endorsement of Brown as the Celtics’ best player, Tatum didn’t hesitate to address the situation. He subtly suggested it was an attempt to sow discord between them ahead of Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
“We understand that people try to drive a wedge between us. I guess it’s a smart thing to do — or try to do. We’ve been in this position for many years, of guys trying to divide us and say that one of us should be traded, or one is better than the other. So it’s not our first time at the rodeo,” he said.
Brown and Tatum’s exceptional understanding of each other was evident in their Game 1 victory over the Mavericks. Brown recorded 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.
Although Tatum did not score as much, he made significant contributions on both ends of the court. He scored 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 turnovers.
Jaylen Brown Shifts Focus from Kidd’s Endorsement to Jayson Tatum’s Sacrifice
When asked about Jason Kidd’s endorsement, Jaylen Brown took a different approach than might be expected. Rather than boasting or expressing gratitude to Kidd, Brown chose to highlight the sacrifices made by his teammate, Jayson Tatum.

“Jayson has had to sacrifice at the highest of levels this year, and I respect him for that,” Brown said.
The ECF MVP later clarified that external distractions and attempts to create division would not deter them from their mission.
“At this point we’re doing whatever it takes to win, and we can’t let outside noise get in between that,” Brown added.
