The New York Knicks could badly use another star on the team, but once presented with one, they decided not to. The New York Knicks reportedly rejected a potential deal for Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George this offseason.
According to ESPN Radio host and studio analyst on the MSG Network Alan Hahn, the Knicks believed that the package they would have had to give up for George was too expensive and they also did not want to give him a contract extension as well.
Once they opened discussions with the Clippers, it was apparent that George wanted an extension, so the trade is now “off the table.”
“They had a chance to get Paul George,” Hahn said. “They said it was too expensive, they don’t want to do it. They’ve already backed outta that. They talked to the Clippers, the Clippers gave what it would cost.
“Then Paul George said, ‘But I want an extension.’ And they said, ‘We’re not doing that.’ And they walked away. So Paul George is off the table. As far as now goes, it’s off the table.”
George is under contract for the 2023-24 season and has a player option for the 2024-25 campaign. The eight-time All-Star is looking to cash in this offseason since he’s eligible for a contract extension worth a maximum of $220 million over four years.
If he does not receive a new deal this summer, he can decline his player option to test free agency next offseason.

While George is one of the most talented two-way wings in the league, his recent injury history makes him a risky player to commit to. He is also 33 and has missed significant time in each of the past three seasons.
The Knicks are coming off a strong season in which they reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals and looking to build off of it. That wouldn’t be possible if they have to give up much of their core to chase Paul George.
