Paolo Banchero’s breakout 2024-25 season hit a big roadblock just five games in. After a promising start, including an astonishing 50-point game against the Indiana Pacers, a torn right oblique muscle sidelined Banchero. The Orlando Magic confirmed the injury on Oct. 31 and announced he’d be out indefinitely, though they set a 4-6 week re-evaluation window.
Before the injury, Banchero maintained an incredible average of 29.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. His 50-point performance clearly set him up for a breakout season. As of mid-December, though, there’s still no official word on when exactly he’ll return. Despite being out for weeks, Banchero remains optimistic about getting back on the court soon. “I think I can get back before Christmas now,” he said, though he understands his return will depend on how his body reacts to rehab and recovery.
Even without Paolo Banchero, the Magic have managed to stay competitive with a 14-9 record, ranking fourth in the Eastern Conference, but they clearly miss his scoring and playmaking. Injuries to other players like Gary Harris and Franz Wagner have made things difficult, so getting Banchero back would be a major boost.
Banchero has been progressing in his recovery with light movement and ball-handling drills, but he’s not yet cleared for full contact. Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said Banchero’s return depends on how his body responds to daily work, adding, “He’s just slowly moving his way to touching the court,” with his fitness being key to the next step.

Banchero’s rehab is moving forward, but he’s still a ways off from full clearance. The focus right now is on getting his body ready through light exercises and ball handling. Mosley has said that conditioning will be a big factor in when Banchero is ready for game action. “A lot of it’s going to come more towards conditioning in a lot of ways,” he said.
The Magic have kept things afloat without Banchero, but they’re definitely looking forward to having him back, especially with a three-game losing streak and challenging matchups ahead against the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. There’s still no clear timeline for his return, but the team’s hopeful he’ll be back soon to help with their playoff push.
